The former Harper’s BAZAAR editor-in-chief recently quit her plum magazine job to launch a new accessible accessories brand The Way. What hasn’t changed is her obsession with new-season trends. Here she shares what we’ll be wearing now it is freezing outside.

Yesterday I was on the phone doing an interview about my new accessories brand The Way and at the end of the interview the journalist asked me to describe what I was wearing. When I described it — printed Gucci midi-skirt, grey Burberry cashmere jumper, an over-sized pink Burberry coat, a pair of RMs and The Way’s Isla Clutch— I realised I’d nailed a few of the new-season trends just by getting dressed in five minutes. And that I had shopped my own wardrobe.

So, what should you shop for this winter?

Go Large or Go Home

For years we’ve been tightly wrapped in tailored coats that fall mid-shin. This year, however, you have permission to seek out comfort first. The new silhouette is oversized and long, to your ankles even. And it should feel like wearing a blanket, which is a bonus. A classic long coat in camel or black is always chic as is a soft grey. And don’t be afraid of colour. Wearing a pop of colour on a gloomy day has got to make you feel better and warmer. Consider all shades: pink, purple and citrus hues (also known as Gen Z yellow and Neo Green). Go-to brands: Camilla and Marc, Max Mara, MacGraw.

Lady-Like It

The Gucci-effect on fashion globally has had a huge impact (1990s redux, return of logomania and $1200 sweatshirts), especially on hem lengths. Pack away those micro mini-skirts, as hemlines right now are demure. Long flowing pleated skirts and midi-length pencil styles are all the go. I’d look for a fab printed maxi skirt to pair back with a black or navy tailored blazer. Clashing prints are still okay – think a floral with a plaid. Just experiment with similar colour spectrums. Pencil skirts with a simple sweater or classic silk or satin blouse are also demure with a capital D. Go-to brands: Zimmermann, Emporio Armani, Scanlan Theodore.

Give It The Boot

An on-trend shoe that is comfortable but doesn’t involve lambswool is here. To balance out the demure ladylike styles instore now, the hot shoe of the season is a chunky military style boot. Louis Vuitton has led the way (although, Dr Martens has been doing it for decades) with a huge range of both ankle and mid-calf styles with chunky rubber soles. Try a little heel height with maxi skirt or tailored trousers. If you prefer a more feminine style, the ankle boot is still very much in season. Look for a pointed toe and stiletto heel. Rock-n-Roll boots with buckles and cowboy boots also get the thumbs up for winter. Go-to brands: RM Williams, ROC boots, Tony Bianco.

Into The Wild

I know, every season you read, hear or see that animal prints are on trend. It’s a fact that animal prints are rarely not on trend. Where trend talk comes in, is specifically how to wear it. This year is just a touch of animal or statement animal print. Faux fur over coats, animal print ankle boots, a scarf, a chic clutch, blouse or simple hair clips. A little goes a long way. Go-to brands: The Way, KITX, Misguided.

Totes Off Duty

If there’s one bag you should have in your wardrobe it is a tote. As a broad category, the tote is a bag that you might think about investing in multiples for. Think a bag for the beach, one for work and another for shopping on the weekend. A slouchy shopper has a laid-back look that works well with your off-duty weekend style or for a yoga or spin class. Go small or big so you have copious space for all your essentials. My fashion trick, or pick me up, has always been to add a splash of colour with an accessory. Adding beautiful winter hues like berry or duck egg blue to your daily uniform adds newness, and what I call fashion joy. Go-to brands: The Way, Louis Vuitton, Karen Walker
