The celebrated lawyer on her key regret: “Own it. Take the credit!”

By Odessa Blain

Azmeena Hussain OAM is the principal lawyer at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers. She’s also a non-executive director at the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) and chairperson of the Islamic Museum of Australia. Here she opens up about what justice means to her.

What is the best piece of feedback you’ve received?
If you stay true to your values in everything you do – you’ll forever find your path.

What are you most proud of in your career?
Extending the footprint of access to justice to ordinary Australians … To me, that’s at the core of justice – safeguarding those on the very fringes of society. I hope I’ve been able to open doors and pave pathways for people to achieve justice.

What if anything would you like to see change for women in the workplace?
Greater representation of women (of all intersectionality) in positions of leadership and around decision making tables without it being a ‘thing’. It still seems like a nice to have or something women talk about but not considered for what it is – a real detriment to organisations and society.

What if any are your professional regrets?
Own spaces! I have a real knack to come up with reasons for why I have fallen into positions or opportunities by chance or even better luck. Own it. Take the credit!

Do you make new year’s resolutions and if so what was it?
Oh I love a good new year’s resolution! … They’re generally set over the very eve itself when I am amongst my kids who present as my best reminder to be more present in the year to come. And maybe even chuck on the runners more often and hit the concrete.

What brings you joy?
Seeing a vulnerable individual being heard and experiencing positive change in their life, whatever that may be.

Who do you most admire?
My mentors – they’re individuals who, despite their many achievements and accolades, have never become too important for the little things, maintaining a strong commitment to their core purpose and values.

And, of course, my mum. Becoming a mother myself recently and raising my two under-two [year-old] boys has given me a profound appreciation of my mum who raised us as a single mother without a biological village around her. That takes grit.
