Pip Marlow is a non-executive board director. Until recently she was the CEO of Salesforce A/NZ & ASEAN, one of the largest global companies. Here, she shares how Shakespeare and rap music are figuring into her use of AI.
What is the best piece of feedback you’ve received? Focus isn’t about doing less, it’s about doing more of what matters most.
What advice would you give to anyone juggling work and other life commitments? It will be messy. Embrace the mess.
What keeps you awake at night? My children. Whilst they are both adults, I always like to know they are home safe.
Who is the best leader you have ever worked for and why? [Former CEO of the REA Group] Tracey Fellows – she pushed me outside of my comfort zone, but never left me alone to fail there. She gave unending support through the toughest times.
Was there ever a time when you felt stuck in your career and if so how did you work through it? For me, purpose changes everything, and it can get you through the times you feel stuck or when facing challenges. When I get clear on the “why” – my purpose, then I can take the next step.
How are you using AI in your life? I am using it to make me more productive, drafting emails and summarising content for my consumption. I am also using it to have a little fun! Writing rap songs and Shakespearian poem content to send my kids messages.
What if any are your professional regrets? [Most] of the regrets or mistakes I have made in my professional career have made me better, stronger and more resilient, so I would avoid those, as painful as they may have been at the moment.
When I think about regrets it is different. For example, I do regret not making it home in time from the US to see my dad before he died — those are the types of regrets I think about.
What brings you joy? Being with my friends and family. It is food for my soul.
Who are three women you’d like to be in the room with when making a big decision? I love this question! [Former REA Group CEO] Tracey Fellows who I talked about above. I would add – [physicist and chemist] Marie Curie, I love her curiosity and pursuit of progress. The last would be [former First Lady] Eleanor Roosevelt – her empathy, diplomacy and advocacy for others were outstanding.
