It may be the unpopular opinion in a time where “wine o’clock” has become a weekly iCal invite, but what happens when you find yourself bored by the bottle? Don’t worry, you do have options. No, I’m not talking about going teetotal (we’re all far too stressed and attached to a nightcap for that kind of madness) but an alternative drop that screams chic and sophisticated – the spirit equivalent to a glass of Penfolds Grange. For those times where you are sick and tired of the grape, turn your attention to these adult-only refreshments that will keep you feeling more lady than, well… the alternative.
A non-negotiable for any bar cart, the juniper-based drink drastically varies in flavour depending on its creation method and ingredients. The spirit is arguably best indulged as a gin and tonic, and can be garnished with everything from grapefruit wedges to lavender. But for Cocktail Porter creator Cameron Northway, gin is best served via martini. “It’s sophisticated,” he says, “It’s the godfather of cocktails and knowing how to make one will be sure to impress your loved ones.” His recipe? Mix together 50mL London Dry Gin with 20mL Dry Vermouth and 1 Dash of orange bitters to a chilled (martini) glass. Garnish with a green olive or lemon peel. Try: Local favourites, Archie Rose and Four Pillars.
