Should you try to change the system from the inside or jump ship?

Welcome to Leadership: Your Questions Answered. Each fortnight, experienced and award-winning leaders Helen McCabe and Jamila Rizvi respond to your workplace queries, questions and conundrums.

Recently, Laura asked… ‘How do you know when to leave an organisation and when to persist with supporting their evolution, particularly around equality and inclusion?

Jamila: The first thing you should do is evaluate to what degree your values and those of your organisation aren’t shared. If your values are a little out of sync, there’s an opportunity for you to support that organisation’s evolution. If they’re significantly out of sync, it’s worth thinking about whether you should be somewhere else. I’d encourage you to look at this from your employer’s perspective as well. They might be just as passionate as you, but be dealing with other concerns that unfortunately sit above their diversity and inclusion goals.

Want to submit a question of your own? We’d love that. Tell us about your leadership conundrum here.
